The 'Hunt is Over'

I woke up this morning to seeing this as the headline on the front page of our Chicago Tribune. Big bold caps, 'HUNT IS OVER.'  I already knew this, as posts were flying across facebook yesterday. I felt relieved to know that this had  ended so soon, and that people were able to feel victorious in the capture of the two suspects. Although, one was killed and the other captured, the city of Boston had gotten these people.  Yes, it is over, and I am glad it's over, but the victims, the families, the minds, the hearts, the  injured bodies, for those people, their lives are on a road of healing now. It's not over for them.

Last Saturday the Boston Marathon started out as a race. The cheerleaders, the spectators, the city cheered for these group of people. The runners had put out several months of mental and physical exertion to race 26.2 miles, and in a moments time that race was changed.  The hundreds of people injured and the three lives taken, along with their families, they are on a different race today. They will be looking to their families and friends and community to give them strength to get through each milestone of recovery, both mentally and physically.

I read somewhere this week, that when one looses a limb due to trauma, it is like death. Their lives are immediately changed, they had no time to prepare. There is the mourning of their loss. It is emotionally devastating for them and their families. The biggest support they will need will be from drawing most of their strength from within. The race they are on now, is to regain their lives. They will do this. A runner never quits on themselves. They keep moving forward.

This next year will be the most difficult. It will be one day at a time. And they will get there. Just as the president had said, there will be those that will run again, and there be those that will be there as a spectator, at the next Boston Marathon.

My sister, who was out with her girls, riding bikes that day, learned of this, one of her thoughts and said it well. "Live for those moments." That is really all we can do.
